The Canadian boys basketball team finished off a busy schedule playing five games over the past week. The Wildcats went 2-2 at last week’s Gruver Holiday Classic Tournament, before falling in a non-district contest at Pampa on Tuesday.

In the warm up to district play, which begins on Jan. 7, Canadian’s Lady Cats are taking nothing for granted. They have now played four No. 1-ranked teams in various classifications, and have beaten all four. The most recent was the Sands Mustangs, ranked first in Class 1A—whom they met on neutral ground in Nazareth.

The Canadian Wildcat basketball team went 1-3 at last weekend’s Jacksboro Tournament. Canadian’s win in the tournament came against Haskell, 62-35.

As the wins pile up, the recognition across the state shines brighter and brighter on the Canadian Lady Cat basketball program. Thanks to a 14-0 start to the season, including three victories over No.

Canadian High School junior Benny Proffitt won the Junior World Finals Saddle Bronc Riding Championship this week, in a series of performances like this one (in photo at right). Proffitt was one of only two competitors to record a qualifying score in all three rounds of the novice division, posting scores of 77.000, 82.500, and 68.000 to win over second-place Wacey Byrne, whose scores were 72.500, 75.000, and 73.000. Another well-known cowboy in this area—Gus Gaillard of Morse— finished the competition in fifth place with two scores of 79.000 and 71.000. The Junior World Finals, presented by Yeti, are being held in the Las Vegas Convention Center and will continue through Saturday, Dec. 11. Over 850 contestants are competing over the 10-day event, hoping to win a piece of $1 million in combined cash and prize payouts, and to claim a coveted Montana Silversmiths championship buckle. Proffitt rides for Region 1 in the Texas High School Rodeo Association, and is now ranked first in steer wrestling, and second in saddle bronc and calf roping. Fresh from football season, the Canadian Wildcat basketball team is off to a 1-1 start in the early portion of the year. Canadian downed Booker, 52-44, last week before falling at home to New Home, 68-15, on Tuesday night.

Canadian hurt itself by making costly special teams’ mistakes while not executing in the red zone. Abernathy made the Wildcats pay with a 37-26 regional semifinal win last Friday afternoon at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Canadian Lady Cat basketball team closed the book on November in a major way, downing No. 1-ranked Panhandle from Class 2A, 43-28, on Tuesday night in Panhandle.

The 7th-Grade Lady Cats have been working, hard preparing for the season. There are only ten girls playing this year, so we don’t have a lot of depth. The girls have been doing a good job during practices and have improved greatly each and every week. Our first game was supposed to be against Dalhart but it was cancelled because Dalhart had a playoff game on that Thursday.
