Lady Cat tennis team serves up solid season start in Canadian tourney

Tennis players from area schools descended on the Canadian High School tennis courts last Tuesday, Feb. 22, with rackets in hand, to take full advantage of sunny skies and relatively mild temperatures. By Wednesday morning, winter had returned, temperatures had dropped again, and bitter temperatures brought across-the-board cancellations of the week’s remaining spring sports events.

CHS girls sweep Amarillo tennis tournament Tuesday

Coach Tim Fletcher reported great success by the Lady Cat tennis team in the Amarillo Tennis Tournament held Tuesday, March 1. Abbi Voorhees won 3-of-3 matches, winning the championship 7-6, 6-4. The Lady Cat doubles teams finished first and second. Clara Pulliam and Karen Aragon won 4-of-4 matches to take the top spot, winning 6-7, 6-2, 10-1. Rita Osornio and Araceli Saldivar won 2-of- 3 matches to place second, finishing 7-9, 2-6, 1-10.

Lady Cats topple Shallowater, snag trophy, and break through to regional semifinals

Canadian gained a measure of revenge they’ve waited a year for on Tuesday night, making a major statement in the process. The Lady Cats knocked off Shallowater 51-45 during a Class 3A regional quarterfinal showdown of state-ranked teams, in what was an electrifying atmosphere at Amarillo’s Caprock Activity Center.

Lady Cats still No. 1 with victory over Abernathy

The No. 1-ranked Canadian opened the Class 3A playoffs in expected fashion, as the Lady Cats rolled to a 56-33 victory over Abernathy in a bi-district matchup at Canyon High School on Tuesday night, All that mattered at the end of the night was the bottom line, and that’s what looked best for both teams, especially what amounted to a dominant performance for Canadian.
