Rotarians emphasize importance of literacy in BES visit this week

Body
Members of Canadian’s Rotary Club visited third-grade classes at Baker Elementary School on Tuesday, talking to the students about the Rotary and community service, and about the importance of literacy. Club members decided this year that instead of giving away dictionaries, as they have in the past, they wanted to refocus on finding joy in reading. The club provided each third-grader with a voucher to pick out a book of their choice at the book fair. Each student also received the gift of author John Erickson’s Hank the Cowdog book, Slim’s Goodbye. “We gave each of them this Hank book, and read them a chapter from it,” said Rotarian Wendie Cook, “because it had several references to Canadian.” In photo above, Rotarians Anna Booze, Wendie Cook and Shane Harris pose with members of Heather Lee’s class.

Rotary welcomes KWDS—Canadian’s Christian radio

Body
Sherye Talley, music program director for Canadian’s own Christian radio station, spoke passionately about this somewhat unknown local gem. This dream first began in August 2016 when a contract was signed to license station KHHC, called The Heart of Hemphill County, found at 91.3 FM. This initial station mainly played instrumental music from a reel. After a couple of months, they decided to switch to live broadcast music and do their own programming. A fee was paid for the rights, and Talley took off developing programming for full-time live music. Original programming was mainly country and western during the week, with gospel music all day on Sunday. With the broadcasting station organized as a nonprofit through the River Ministries, Talley began to feel the pull for a more positive influence on the community.
