What's Cookin': Lemon Cake

Body
My sister-in-law, Patricia, made this Lemon Cake from a Ina Garten recipe she found on the Food Network website. Using lemons from her own Meyer Lemon tree—they live in Arizona—it was sweet and tart, and by far, the best I have ever tasted. Will have another piece to confirm… KIM B. McKINNEY

Body
Here they come! The masks are off, and tourists are heading to our little West Texas town this Memorial Day weekend. Families want to have cookouts, drink beer, and go swimming in the river. What’s the big attraction? Our town is unincorporated. There is no law enforcement presence here. The shady riverfront areas owned by the county are free. The riverfront will be crowded all summer.

Rice University students visit Rotary

Body
Our club has enjoyed the musically-talented Alex Moreno as a program several times before, but this time was unique as he brought three equally talented friends from Rice University, where Alex is finishing his freshman year. Rotarian Wendie Cook, executive director at The Citadelle Art Museum and promoter of all arts, is one of Alex’s biggest fans. She and Alex publicized today that they have been working undercover on a project since November 2020 that will blend the two art forms of music and museums.

The Postscript: The Treat Lady

Body
Tanner and Dakota are waiting for me. They’re standing at the corner of their chain-link fence, watching the sidewalk. They know I’m coming, even if they don’t know exactly when, even if they can’t see the sidewalk very well and can’t hear at all.

River Valley Pioneer Museum

Body
Last week, we had a very interesting group of ladies stop by the museum. You may have even heard them as they drove through town on the highway. They are members of the Motor Maids—one of the oldest ladies-only motorcycle groups in America. These women were from all over Texas. Yes, a women’s-only motorcycle gang!
