SILVEUS INSURANCE GROUP The Canadian/Hemphill County Chamber of Commerce hosted ribbon-cuttings for two new businesses during the last week—a hopeful sign that the local economy may be rebounding from the pandemic slump. Gordon Clark, of Silveus Insurance Group, wielded the over-sized scissors to snip the ceremonial ribbon for his new office at 206 Main Street (next to the Palace Theatre) last Wednesday.

Julia Schafer of ‘Olive’s Door’

Body
With college application deadlines looming, Christina Hadaway invited Julia Schafer of Olive’s Door to speak to the club about her role in assisting students through the scholarship process. Julia has been helping Christina’s senior son, Everett, and Christina said how wonderful it is to hand those particular reins over to Julia. It seems kids are more responsive with their responsibilities when it’s not their parents doing the nagging!

Since mid-January, I have slowly worked through the Malouf “Oofie” Abraham collection, donated by Kelley Cooper-Cameron. I have really enjoyed learning about Oofie, his life, and his political career. One thing I found particularly interesting was that, as mayor of Canadian, he helped with the immigration of a Hungarian refugee family fleeing their communist-ruled country.

Exploring the art of jewelry-making with Colby Waters

Body
In last week’s Rotary Club meeting, Janet Guthrie introduced Colby Waters, “the man of a thousand hobbies.” When Colby was a teenager, he experimented with silver coins. While working in a Pampa pawn shop, and in travels to New Mexico, he developed a friendship with jewelry-makers, which led him to try making his own jewelry.
