CHS Class of ‘71 unites for semi-centennial celebration

Body
The Canadian High School graduating class of 1971 celebrated its 50th reunion over the July 4th weekend here—making up for the unfortunate cancellation, due to the COVID pandemic, of last year’s five-year All-School Reunion. Several viewed Saturday morning’s parade from the courthouse lawn, and spent the day exploring the old home town and visiting with family and friends. A reunion gathering was held Saturday evening at Bill and Valerie Isaacs’ home, where classmates gathered to reminisce and tell stories; enjoyed food and cold beverages; and then headed to the rodeo grounds to watch the action, view the fire works, and maybe do a little two-stepping at the rodeo dance. As reported by one class member, Ruth Rogers Beasley, “The Class of ‘71 celebrated our 50th over the 4th with good food, fellowship, much laughter, ‘excellent’ wine, and tons of fun—and somehow no one got thrown into the pool. (That would never have happened in the 70s!) We missed those who couldn’t make it, fondly remembered those too many classmates we have lost, and we’re already planning for the next reunion.” Class members—both actual and honorary—and their significant others who were present for the evening were Keith Popham*; Kelley Ward; Beverly Baggett*; Kim Morgan; Jody Wilson; Lynne Baggett*; Becky Vice Wilson*; Carey and Shirley* Keeton; Diane Cockrell Zenor; Darrell Cockrell*; Starla Clay Birdsong; Shirley Sanders; Wes Lucke*; Pam Livingston; Steve and Linda* Rader; Ruth Rogers Beasley; Brenda Duncan Breeze; Terry Beasley; Teresa Lingg; and the gracious hosts, Bill and Valerie* Isaacs. How the Smiley Johnson Band came to be

Many returning 4th of July spectators are sure to recognize and enjoy the Smiley Johnson Municipal Band on the Courthouse lawn the morning of the “Star-Spangled Salute” parade.
