Many returning 4th of July spectators are sure to recognize and enjoy the Smiley Johnson Municipal Band on the Courthouse lawn the morning of the “Star-Spangled Salute” parade.
The River Valley Pioneer Museum is hosting a new photography exhibit called Bones of Texas, by Morgan Page and Dustin Rice. The exhibit consists of 30 framed photographs which are accompanied by historical context panels that bring life to the images.
Well-known to the Texas Panhandle, talented musicians Mitchell Ford and the Volunteers and the Tyler Wilhelm Band will perform at the rodeo dances, following the rodeo, throughout the Fourth of July weekend festivities. Dances will be held at Jones Pavilion on Friday, July 2, and Saturday, July 3, from 9 pm to 1 am. Tickets are $10/person and can be purchased at the gate.

Edgar Degas—The Private Impressionist, Works on Paper by the Artist and His Circle will open on Thursday, July 1, in The Citadelle Art Museum Gallery. This impressive private collection of Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator Emeritus of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts Museum of San Francisco, is the culmination of a lifetime of art preservation.
Summer Theatre Camp starts Monday, June 28! During next week’s rehearsals, 30 campers will be hard at work to prepare for their upcoming performance. Showtime is at 6 pm on Friday, July 2, in the Texas Crown Performance Hall.
Along with many Independence Day celebrations, the famous Turtle Race is back. The race is sponsored by the Canadian River Beach Club. All kids 12 and under are welcome to participate. Registration will begin at 8 am on Saturday, July 3, on the courthouse parking lot. Sign-ups will continue until the parade reaches the courthouse. The races will start immediately after the parade. The big day is coming up, and there are a few rules to remember in preparation.
