Once again, the Canadian Wildcats are playing football in the month of December.
The No. 4-ranked Wildcats are headed to the round of eight in the UIL Class 3A Division II Texas High School football playoffs after clicking on all cylinders in a complete 63-14 dismantling of Spearman during last Friday’s regional semifinal at Borger’s Bulldog Stadium.
The Thanksgiving break didn’t stop the No. 6-ranked Canadian Lady Cats from feasting on its opponents last week.
Canadian started by avenging a year-old loss to Gruver, then going down to Wichita Falls and winning the Fantasy of Lights Tournament small-school division to cap a 5-0 performance.
For an unprecedented 11th straight year, the Canadian Wildcat football team will play on Thanksgiving weekend.
In a stiff test against the Early Longhorns, Canadian was able to pull away, getting a hard-fought 42-14 win in the Class 3A Division II area round at Vernon’s Lion Stadium last Friday night.
The junior varsity Lady Cats got a five-game workout in Amarillo tournament play last week and chalked up three victories.
Canadian opened the UIL Class 3A Division II playoffs looking like a team on a mission, absolutely destroying last year’s regional champion, Lubbock Roosevelt, 70-8, last Thursday at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon.
The Wildcats improve to 9-2 overall and are now headed to the area round, where they will take on the Early Longhorns (7-4) at 7 pm on Friday night on Leo Brittain Field at Lions Stadium in Vernon.
Former Canadian Wildcat Manny Ramsey recently wrapped up his very successful playing career at Fort Hays State last Saturday against Pittsburg State (Kansas). Ramsey’s team fell 35-14 to a very talented Pitt squad, and Ramsey’s final stat from that contest was a solo catch for 7 yards. However, that comes nowhere close to signifying his contribution to the program.
Ramsey will go down as one of the best leaders and players to ever put on a Fort Hays State Tiger uniform.
FRESHMAN LADY CATS
On Saturday, Nov. 12, Coach Josh Mayhew’s ninth-grade Lady Cats defeated the Lefors varsity girls in a 24-18 game. Leading scorers were Sophia Mills and Addy Boyd, with 7 points each, and Sadie Kauk with 6. Jacy Long tossed in 2 more, while Jacky Lerma and Rebekah Avila contributed 1 each.
