Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Minick retires after 20 years of service

Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Minick, a Canadian native, enlisted in the United States Navy as a nuclear machinist mate in November of 2000. After completing the enlisted nuclear pipeline, he was selected as a junior staff instructor at Nuclear Power Unit MTS 626 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Panhandle War Memorial offers military history lecture series

On the first Saturday of each month, the Texas Panhandle War Memorial hosts a one-hour lecture/ seminar on topics related to military history. The next presentation will be on Saturday July 2, at 1:30 pm, and will be presented by noted local historian Dr. Paul Matney.

Four misdemeanor cases are heard in Hemphill Co. Court

Hemphill County Attorney Kyle Miller reported the following disposition of four misdemeanor criminal cases last Wednesday, June 8. •Esai Palacios pled guilty to theft of property, valued between $750 and $2,500, and was granted credit for time served (39 days) and to comply with all terms and conditions of probation.

Countywide burn ban, in effect since Feb. 14, is rescinded

Hemphill County commissioners voted unanimously to extend the countywide outdoor burn ban for another 45 days last Tuesday, May 31, with the understanding that County Judge Lisa Johnson had the authority to rescind the ban should the area receive enough moisture in the ensuing days.

THE LAST TIME John Saucedo performed on a concert stage in Canadian was back in the spring of 2010. On a lark, “Sauce” and his buddies—Brad Layman, Taylor Schafer, Brad Hickey, and Emmett Webb—threw together an impromptu band over the previous weekend, and entered the Canadian’s Got Talent competition.

HCH Board reviews new behavioral health service

In an update of the Behavioral Health Department (BHD), CEO Christy Francis told the Hemphill County Hospital Board on May 17 that the district’s new service line had encountered “three big bumps in the road.” The district acquired Hope Awakened Counseling (HAC) in August 2021 from Anna Needham, M.A., SPC-S. Francis said credentialing, licensing, and oversight requirements were factors that had hindered its performance.

One in three Texas vehicle deaths due to speed

AMARILLO—Amarillo Police Department (APD) officers responded to a motor vehicle collision Sunday afternoon on Soncy Street (FM 2590) at Buccola Avenue in Amarillo. Two people died at the scene. Speed was a factor in the crash.
