Art in the Ruins

Body
After months of planning, the West Texas A&M University Mural Squad arrived in Canadian, led by painting professor Jon Revett, with a mission to transform “the ruins” with a new mural. The painting project took about three days and involved the work of several art students—most of them studio majors—as well as one studying graphic design, another art education, and two college painting professors from two universities also in the mix. Their names are preserved in one corner of the mural. The community arts project was generously funded by WTAMU and by the Citadelle, along with donors who believe in supporting community arts mural projects across the region. For those who don’t already know, “the ruins” is located on Kingman and 6th streets, next to the CISD Technology building.

Bryan Bartlett joins incumbents Smith and Orrell on Canadian ISD school board

Body
A six-man school board race and two constitutional amendments failed to rouse much of a crowd in the May 7 election, attracting only 572 voters to cast ballots. That amounts to about 22 percent of the 2,557 registered voters in the Canadian Independent School District, which encompasses most of Hemphill County and what was the Higgins School District in Lipscomb County before it consolidated with Canadian ISD in 2020.

Last Thursday morning at approximately 6:32 am, a 2009 GMC pickup driven by Antonio Capetillo Jr. of Canadian was involved in a crash with a BNSF trail at the Purcell Street crossing in Canadian. Closed-circuit video was obtained to determine the details of the crash.
The driver of this GMC pickup got lucky Thursday morning, when he accelerated into a lowered crossing arm and struck the side of a passing train. The pickup was not so lucky. Law enforcement officials were unsure what had caused the accident, but cited Capetillo with disregarding a railroad crossing signal.
