Hemphill County commissioners voted unanimously to extend the countywide outdoor burn ban for another 45 days last Tuesday, May 31, with the understanding that County Judge Lisa Johnson had the authority to rescind the ban should the area receive enough moisture in the ensuing days.

On May 23, Hemphill County Hospital district administration invited family members of Mesa View Senior Living (MVSL) residents for an informational meeting regarding the facility’s care plan. Six administration and staff members were on hand for the discussion, attended by seven family members.

On a lark, “Sauce” and his buddies—Brad Layman, Taylor Schafer, Brad Hickey, and Emmett Webb—threw together an impromptu band over the previous weekend, and entered the Canadian’s Got Talent competition.

An ad in last week’s Canadian Record notified the public that donations made to the Thomas Brown Reward Fund would be returned to those who contributed, and asked that anyone who could verify their donation to the fund contact County Treasurer Kay Smallwood at 806.323.6671.

The reward fund was first established in January 2017, following the Thanksgiving Day 2016 disappearance of Canadian High School senior Thomas Brown.

Sirens pierced the quiet just after midnight on Labor Day morning, calling Canadian firefighters to the Cattle Exchange Steakhouse just a block away. Alarms inside the Moody Building, where the restaurant is located, alerted Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers to the fire.

At exactly 10:41 pm on Friday night, May 27, someone driving what appears to be a black pickup truck, traveling south on 4th Street, pulled up to the corner of Main Street. The vehicle stops. The driver gets out and walks in front of the pickup toward the by-now-familiar “There’s a Killer Among Us” sign, which seeks information connected to the Thanksgiving 2016 disappearance and subsequent death of then-Canadian High School senior Thomas Brown.

About 60 people gathered at Canadian’s Edith Ford Cemetery Monday morning in observance of Memorial Day. They watched as the American Legion Post 56 honor guard of Warren Rivers, Matthew Huff, John McGarr, and Post Commander Tommy Wyatt, led by flag bearer Lacie Benjamin, marched single-file over a small knoll past the graves of Hemphill County’s soldiers and citizens.
