The Lady Cats’ mile relay team left Austin on Saturday with gold medals, finally capping off what had been a frustrating year with a 4×400-meter relay state championship. Marcee Smith, Patricia Cullender, Mae Johnson, and Tori Hamby ran their fastest time ever with a 4:03.25, barely edging out Hamlin’s time of 4:03.94. The Lady Cats [...]

  • Setting The Record straight: It was brought to our attention this week by an astute reader that we incorrectly identified Sheriff Morse Burroughs as a candidate for re-election to the Hemphill County Sheriffs’ Office. Sheriff Burroughs has never been elected to that office. He was appointed to the position in a unanimous vote by Hemphill County Commissioners last June following Sheriff Gary Henderson’s unexpected retirement from that office at the beginning of his second term. We apologize for the error. —LEB »
  • Athletic Banquet scheduled for May 17: The CHS Athletic Banquet has been postponed one week due to a scheduling conflict. CISD Athletic Director Chris Koetting told The Record Friday that five CHS students are receiving awards at the Happy State Bank banquet in Amarillo on May 17th, the original date set for the Wildcats' traditional year-end awards banquet, making it necessary to reschedule. Ballard Saul will receive the Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Emily Lusk and Richie Northcott will be recognized as the Tennis Players of the Year. Braden and Boston Hudson are also being recognized during the evening. Instead, Canadian High's Athletic Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 24, 6:30 pm at the Canadian Elementary School Cafetorium. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10/person. »
  • Early voting in four-way school board race off to a slow start: With early voting in the May 12 school trustee election underway this week, only seventeen voters had filled out their ballots by the end of the day Wednesday, according to Canadian ISD officials. Early voting began Monday in the race between four candidates—Ray Anderson, Cody Culwell , Courtney Krehbiel Trollinger and Rudy Godino—for two open seats on the CISD board of trustees. A candidate question and answer in last week’s Record gave all four school board hopefuls an opportunity to air their views on a number of school-related issues. Those wishing to cast early ballots may do so at the school administration building at 800 Hillside. Early voting ends May 8. District-wide balloting will be conducted on election day in the foyer at Canadian High School from 7 am-7 pm. »
