All three sub-varsity Wildcat teams won their final games last week—and all three earned district championship honors, following in the well-traveled path of the varsity Wildcats, who also capped their regular-season schedule last week with a district trophy, and are off to the races in the bi-district playoffs.

A savage battle between two evenly-matched, hungry-for-thewin teams—one with a state title under their belt—thrilled fans as the Canadian Lady Cats edged the 2A, No. 1-ranked, defending state champs Groom Lady Tigers 50-47 at home Tuesday.

Canadian’s offense is on a complete tear, showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats clicked on all cylinders Friday night, scoring on every first-half possession on the way to a dominating 70-0 shutout of Tulia at Wildcats Stadium.

Three members of the Canadian High School crosscountry teams finished in the top-10 at the twice-delayed District 1-3A meet held at Canyon High School on Friday, and qualified for the regional meet, which will be held Nov. 9 in Lubbock.

Four-year players are a rarity at the high school football level. There has to be some special intangible a head coach sees to trust putting a 14- or 15-year-old in a game to compete on the field with experienced juniors and seniors.

The eighth-grade and JV Wildcats headed south last Thursday, escaping the polar icecap of the northeastern Panhandle in search of unfrozen football turf. With the seventh-graders sidelined by COVID, the eighth-graders took the field first.

Canadian’s football future looks bright with the 5th- and 6th-grade Cats defeating Merritt 12-0 for the tourney trophy Sunday at Sayre Athletic Field in Sayre, Oklahoma. Receiver Charlene Cervantes earned Most Valuable Player honors for her efforts in the twoday tournament.

Second-year girls basketball Head Coach Aaron Marks can’t wait to unleash his Lady Cats at home Saturday in the first of two scrimmages, followed quickly by matchups with two top-10 teams, including defending 2A state champs Gruver.

With two more games left in the season, the seventh- and eighth-grade Wildcats continue to improve. Both teams took their show on the road, posting lopsided victories against the Friona Chieftains last Thursday.
