The Canadian Community Center would like to send out a BIG thanks to everyone who came out and got a taco plate at our taco pile-on fundraiser on the 4th of July! Shout out to Mike and Jamie Jernigan for donating the salsa. We would also like to thank Darlene Purcell, Tiffany Aldana, Alexandra Cipollone, and Karen Bradford for all the help with the parade and pile-on, as well as Keller English, Cael and Breven Aldana, Isaac Saenz, B.J. Hernandez, Ledger Yarnold, Donnie Purcell, Morgan Bradford, Fabian Diaz, Roberto Alvarez, and Brian Mondragon for serving our awesome community. And last but not least, a big thank you to the Hemphill County Library!

We would like to thank the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department for their quick response and expertise in putting out the fire on our property east of Canadian on the 4th of July. They are always ready and always willing, and we are forever grateful!

Kit Looper, 84, died June 14, 2022, at her home in Hines, Minnesota. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 21, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Comptroller releases broadband plan State Comptroller Glenn Hegar last week released his agency’s plan to support the expansion of broadband internet access to areas with limited or no access. Hegar and his agency’s Broadband Development Office received feedback through a series of town halls, virtual discussions, and more than 16,000 responses to a survey.

Anti-gun violence protests and more school safety measures Anti-gun violence protests were held in multiple cities across the state over the weekend, while the state has imposed additional measures designed to strengthen school security. Texas State University’s Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) program will be provided to all Texas school districts.

We have become numb to the murder of our children

ONCE MORE WE ARE EXPRESSING our thoughts and prayers for murdered children on social media, demanding Congress act to prevent such heinous acts. Despite most of us demanding change, this atrocity will too soon disappear from media and our consciousness with nothing substantive being accomplished, because the will of the majority will have been thwarted by the minority. (And the few who remember past such events will add “again.”)
