We are so excited to feature some of local artisan Dale Forrest’s handmade cheese boards and home décor in our gift shop this summer. Forrest’s cheese boards come in a variety of styles, including solid oak and boards made of multiple woods. These are in tended to be used and can be easily cared for by reapplication of mineral oil as needed. His home décor line includes crosses made from rustic barn wood as well as the detailed crosses made from 60 individual wood cuts.

Feeling grumpy? Need a drink? That’s what a new business in town is counting on. For the first time in the 150-year history of this West Texas village, we are getting a liquor store called Grumpy’s. We’ve had our share of moonshiners and residents who sold alcohol to minors, but we’ve never had a liquor store until now. We’ve had a pool hall, a domino hall, and at least two dance halls, but never a package store. A county ordinance passed 25 years ago permits the local convenience store to sell wine and beer. Last year, a bar opened on Main Street, and a barbeque restaurant on the highway has a BYOB policy when it hosts outdoor concerts.

Kelly Bashaw, Gene Howe Wildlife Preserve

Body
Sarah Rader introduced Kelly Bashaw, wildlife biologist with the Gene Howe Wildlife Preserve. Bashaw grew up in Dallas in an urban setting, but her family spent a lot of time in national parks—camping, fishing, and hiking. These trips are what opened her heart to a love for nature and wildlife. She chose this path for college and graduated from Stephen F Austin University in Nacogdoches.

Beau Bundy: BNSF Railroad

Body
“This all happened because my father didn’t buy me a train set as a kid.” That’s what billionaire Warren Buffett joked in an interview when he purchased Burlington Northern Santa Fe back in 2009 for over $26 billion dollars. Skeptics at the time doubted Buffett’s investment and said he paid too much. However, looking at our little Canadian provides a glimpse into what kind of “small return” Buffett has the potential for with his railroad.
