WE’VE GOT SO MUCH PLANNED for the month of July, but I first want to take the opportunity to welcome visitors and homecomers alike as you visit Canadian for our annual 4th of July Celebration; one of the oldest in the state! Please stop in to see us at the museum to learn a little about our great community. Whether you’ve never been here, or if you haven’t visited in a while, I think you’ll learn something new about Hemphill County.

Campbell Spence, Hazel Aycock (at top) and Ross Martin (above) were among those enjoying the chance to craft take-home games and learn new ones at Board Game Camp last Tuesday morning. CCC Director Ike Julian shared some of the games he has discovered in his travels with these eager youngsters, who played Egyptian Sennat, Mancala, and the Royal Game of Ur, and competed in Clue and Checkers Tourneys. Rotary: The Canadian Record

Last year, I was on a John Grisham kick and read The Last Juror, which is about a 23-year-old man who buys a local newspaper in Mississippi and revives it, but not without a good lesson in small-town politics. The story initially revolves around the town trying to solve the murder case of a young mother, but gets more mysterious as several of the jurors are murdered off, one by one after the trial is held.

Postscript: Lucky Squirrel

Body
MY HUSBAND, PETER, AND I went to our first concert in the park last night. We brought our folding chairs and ate food from the food trucks. The weather was perfect, and the music was good. But upstaging the band were a pair of juvenile squirrels in the trees overhead, challenging one another to feats of greater and greater daring. I half expected to have an adolescent squirrel land in my lap.

River Valley Pioneer Museum: Does Your Tree Branch?

Body
I enjoy researching my family history, and from time to time, we’ll have museum patrons researching certain pieces of their family history. It’s always a treat to help them find a little more information. Before I lost my grandpa, I would bother him with all kinds of family history questions, and he’d often get annoyed or not want to answer some of my questions. When pressed, he would tell me, “You might find out something you don’t want to know!” Well, that would only stop the questions for a little while.
