Judge dismisses libel lawsuit against Record's Ezzell Brown and three codefendants

In a ruling issued late Monday afternoon, 99th District Court Judge J. Phillip Hays granted a motion to dismiss a libel lawsuit against The Canadian Record and Editor/Publisher Laurie Ezzell Brown. The lawsuit was filed in February on behalf of the Estate of Thomas Brown through its representative and Tom’s mother Penny Meek, and individually by Penny Meek, her husband Chris Meek, and her son Tucker Brown.

TxDOT urges Texans to give driving their full attention

AUSTIN – Distracted driving is on the rise in Texas, and TxDOT is urging all Texans to pay attention on the road. 

In an instant, Karin Zaltsman of San Antonio lost her teenaged daughter in a 2017 crash when a driver made the decision to take his eyes off the road to text while driving. TxDOT is sharing the Zaltsman family’s story of losing 13-year-old Emily as part of its “Talk. Text. Crash.” distracted driving awareness campaign this month, to remind Texans to keep their eyes up and phones down while driving.

City Manager reports efforts to suppress mosquito problems

Canadian City Manager Joe Jarosek notified The Record this morning of his staff’s efforts—now underway—to suppress the growing mosquito population in town. The problem has been compounded by the abundance of precipitation this area has received over the last three weeks.

Canadian's Memorial Day observance 2023

Monday, May 29, 2023, was Memorial Day and Canadian's observance at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery saw perfect weather for the annual event.

The Honor Guard included David Parnell (flag bearer), Tommy Wyatt, John Rivers, Lacie Benjamin, Billy Benjamin, Alfred Godino, John McGarr, Jason Bradford and Warren Rivers. Dr. Malouf Abraham presented the memorial wreath, John McGarr gave a special address honoring a local veteran, the late Ray Risley. Tina Godino cued the National Anthem and Taps and Ana Lovelace assisted the Honor Guard with its presentation.
