The Hemphill County Hospital District now has a new member on its board of directors: Whitney Jones. Jones won 66 votes in Saturday’s election, over current board member Jesse Hanes’s 48. Cory Pittman received 99 votes and Colby Leach, 104.
The City Council and CISD Board elections were both cancelled due to the lack of contested races.
Clock ticking on moving bills
The clock is ticking on getting bills out of the House and to the Texas Senate, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick warned last week in a story in the Austin American-Statesman. Patrick presides over the Senate and is worried many bills that have made it out of House committees but have not gone before the full chamber will not be considered before the session ends.

WASHINGTON—On Friday, May 5, Representative Ronny Jackson (TX-13) announced that seven students from Texas’ 13th Congressional District received appointments to three U.S. Service Academies.
As a Member of Congress, Jackson can nominate students from TX-13 for appointments to the United States Air Force, Naval, Military (West Point), and Merchant Marine Academies. Jackson can also nominate students from the entire State of Texas to the Merchant Marine Academy.
This year, the Hemphill County Hospital Board election is the only race to be decided at the ballot box. Voting will take place today, Saturday, May 6, in the Canadian High School Foyer, located at 621 S. 5th Street in Canadian, from 7 am to 7 pm.

(AUSTIN) — Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today said state sales tax revenue totaled $4.09 billion in April, 6.7 percent more than in April 2022. The majority of April sales tax revenue is based on sales made in March and remitted to the agency in April.
