County Commission schedules public hearings on 2023-24 budget, tax rate

The Hemphill County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on at 9 am on Monday, August 14, to discuss and hear public comment on the proposed 2023-2024 fiscal year budget. The hearing will be held in the Commissioners Court meeting room #204 at the Hemphill County Courthouse, 400 Main, in Canadian. The public is welcome to attend.

Ballot order announced for Nov. 7 Constitutional Amendment Election

AUSTIN —Last week, the Deputy Secretary of State Joe Esparza drew the ballot order for the 14 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

Texans will vote on these amendments as a part of the November 7 Election. Below is the ballot order as drawn.

Proposition 1 – HJR 126 "The constitutional amendment protecting the right to engage in farming, ranching, timber production, horticulture, and wildlife management."

Xcel Energy offers payment options, billing help

AMARILLO–An extended streak of record-setting temperatures in Xcel Energy’s Texas-New Mexico service area has driven up electricity usage and billing costs, following a trend seen across many parts of the country. Xcel Energy is urging customers who may have difficulties paying bills to contact customer agents for options in making payments.

Child care centers closing across state

An unprecedented number of child care centers are expected to close across the state as pandemic relief funding ends, the Texas Standard reported. A survey conducted by the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children of about 1,600 child care programs indicated 44% were likely to close their doors without additional funding. Federal pandemic relief funds ended for most centers in June.

Community-wide project to replace aging swimming pool takes shape

Body

An effort to replace Canadian’s 45-year-old swimming pool is gaining traction this summer from a coalition of elected officials who believe that a new facility, designed to be used year-round, could benefit the entire community in a variety of ways.

The existing municipal swimming pool was built in 1978. Its construction was funded by $300,000 in voter-approved bonds. Its estimated replacement cost today is a whopping $3-5 million.
