Many a bucket list has been sidelined by the pandemic. Most of my friends had elaborate travel plans they had to abandon. Vicki and Larry wanted to achieve their goal of visiting every continent. Louise and Jim had to call off a trip to France. A group of four friends had planned an extended trip to India. A new list has become popular during the past two years that may give consolation to those who have had to postpone bucket-list activities. Instead of making a list of all the things you want to do before you kick the bucket, the latest craze is the chuck-it list—all the things you have absolutely no desire to do.

Subdued best describes Christmas decorations this year in my West Texas village. After the elaborate Halloween and Thanksgiving displays on my street, I was expecting even grander Christmas décor. So far, there are no displays in yards, just multicolored lights on eaves and gables, fences, gates, and trees. Two dueling trends this year are multicolored lights and solid blue. Maybe the blue is a fashion choice or it could be a subliminal expression of the collective mood. Has Christmas lost its excitement or are the people who went all out for Halloween and Thanksgiving displays simply played out? Here’s a rundown on this year’s anticlimactic Christmas decoration choices…

4-H’ers brighten holiday season with Monday evening car parade

Body
Hemphill County 4-H students assembled a colorful Christmas parade on wheels Monday evening and braved the unaccustomed chill to spread some holiday cheer. Their first drive-by was at the Mesa View Assisted and Senior Living, where residents enjoyed viewing the vehicles decorated with Christmas lights and baubles, and filled with an interesting assortment of Grinches; elves; reindeer; and yes, even a human Christmas tree. From there, the procession made its way down Willard and up Cheyenne, and then to Main Street and downtown Canadian. The festive show ended at Brown Bag Roasters where students, sponsors, and parents warmed up with cups of hot chocolate. Shown in the photo above, taken for The Record by part-time barista, part-time photographer Miranda Calabrese, are Dylan Leach, Corbin Throgmorton, Karson Thompson, Haeleigh Thompson, and Barrett Flynn.
