On two very hot August days, with the first day of school approaching, Kaylee Richardson, Lauren Woodrum, and Harper Spencer set up a lemonade stand on Canadian’s main thoroughfare, near the center of downtown, and launched a pop-up business.

A hearing by the city council to receive public comment on Toot ‘n Totum’s annexation request Monday evening was called to order and concluded in mere seconds. Other than the company’s Director of Real Estate, Bruce Armistead, who had filed the annexation request, no member of the public was present to comment on the issue.

This new trash truck (photo at top) is one example of the diverse efforts city officials are making to stretch tax dollars farther. The truck has more capacity for waste, and greater strength for compaction, explained City Manager Joe Jarosek. The result is fewer trips to the transfer station during their regular collection routes, lowering fuel and manpower costs. Last Thursday morning, crews baled metal waste that had collected at the city/county transfer station, saving substantially on hauling costs and earning some revenue from the metal recyclers who purchased the compacted waste, as well. On Monday, city wastewater technicians Carlos Lopez and Trey Evans (in photo below) performed required maintenance at the wastewater treament ponds, protecting and extending the life of the aerators, which promote microbial growth in the wastewater. Aeration removes constituents from the water in preparation for the next phase of treatment. Added benefits are that the process is organic, cost-effective, and environmentallyfriendly.

A routine traffic stop by a Texas Department of Public Service trooper Tuesday evening on US 83 quickly turned into a manhunt, when the driver jumped out of his vehicle and fled on foot. DPS Sgt.

A Canadian man was severely burned in a gas explosion that occurred last Wednesday evening at a natural gas processing location about 9 miles east of Canadian on Lake Marvin Road. Energy Transfer LP employee Marc Crooks, 42, had arrived at the location sometime before 8:40 pm and pulled his pickup up to a frac tank when his engine died.

AMARILLO—More than 50 people representing multiple state agencies were honored at the 27th Annual Texans Caring for Texans event on Thursday, Aug. 4.
