Wednesday evening, the citizens of Canadian met in a mass meeting in the court room and discussed the best method to prevent the recurrence of the “Flu” epidemic. Mayor Taylor presided and various things pertinent and impertinent were discussed.

As discussed in last week’s Museum Notes, the 1918 influenza pandemic ran from spring 1918 to spring 1919. We know that the 1918 virus affected Canadian, but we do not have many firsthand accounts.

In 1918 until spring 1919, the “Spanish flu” circled the globe. It is estimated that 500 million worldwide were infected, which was about a third of the world’s population at the time. An estimated 50 million worldwide died from the virus or from complications of it.
