Xcel Energy warns customers of potential scammers

Body
MINNEAPOLIS—Xcel Energy has recently become aware of a potential scam in which people looking to complete common transactions, including starting new utility service, may find a phone number online that connects them to scammers, instead of Xcel Energy. The company encourages customers who are looking to start new electric or natural gas service, or conduct other business with the company, to ensure they are calling Xcel Energy directly at 1.800.895.4999 to avoid the potential for scammers to collect information or money from them.

Daylight saving time, a true love/hate story

Body
I grew up in South Texas. My dad was a cotton/grain farmer and cotton gin/grain elevator owner. He and others who worked long hours out-of-doors loved daylight saving time (DST). During the summer harvest season, the sun shone well past 9. As a kid, I loved it, as well. It meant I did not have to “clean up” and go to bed, and I could stay dirty and happy much longer. As an adult, the same holds true, dirty and happy longer… DST has been in effect in the U.S. and in many European countries since World War I. In an effort to conserve fuel needed to produce electric power, Germany and Austria began saving daylight on April 30, 1916, by advancing the hands of the clock one hour until the following October. Other countries immediately adopted this 1916 action, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, and Tasmania. Nova Scotia and Manitoba adopted it as well, with Britain following suit three weeks later, on May 21, 1916. A year later, Australia and Newfoundland began saving daylight.

Vote yes to citywide alcohol sales

Body
WITH EARLY VOTING BEGINNING Oct. 24, I would like to encourage every registered voter in the Canadian city limits to vote early and vote YES for the sale of alcohol in Canadian. We are living in times where we cannot rely on the oilfield to save us financially, and with sales tax down, the sale of alcohol will add a boost to our sales tax, which, in turn, will help to decrease our property taxes in the city limits. This vote has nothing to do with helping a big business come into our town, but it is to help us survive now and to increase our sales tax in the easiest way available right now. Naturally, we hope to attract more businesses of every kind that would benefit our community and add more sales tax, but the financial help we need is now.

In these photos, taken last Thursday by City Manager Joe Jarosek, Flores Concrete personnel prepare steel rebar for an upcoming concrete pour at Purcell Street (above), workers are compacting “fill soils” around the newly-installed manhole behind the Cattle Exchange in preparation for concrete surfacing (right), and surface replacement is underway in the alley behind Happy State Bank (below). The general contractor on the project is Amarillo Utility Contractors. The concrete repair is part of the TxDOT Utility Replacement Project.
