Heath Mitchell easily wins four-way school board race; only 22 percent of local registered voters participate

Less than 20 percent of Hemphill County’s registered voters cast ballots in the Nov. 2 general election to determine the fate of eight proposed constitutional amendments this year. Out of 2,312 of those registered, a mere 443 voters exercised their democratic right—111 of those in early voting by personal appearance, and only 15 by casting absentee ballots.

Hospital board closes out FY 2021 audit year, shows increase in services provided

During the financial reports delivered in the Oct. 19 Hemphill County Hospital District board meeting, Jennifer Cox, with Thomas & Thomas Financial Management Services, reported $5.6 million in cash for the district, as of Oct. 15. The amount included $837,944 in undedicated cash; $3.7 million in the tax account; $613,000 in CDs; and $503,000 in dedicated cash. The tax account figure represented $200,000 in year ‘22 tax payments.

Governor’s adoption of new political maps yields ‘22 primary election calendar release

On Monday, Oct. 25, Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation adopting new redistricting maps for the U.S. House of Representatives, Texas Senate, Texas House of Representatives, and State Board of Education. His action cleared the way for state election officials to announce the official dates for the 2022 primary and primary runoff elections, which are expected to be held on March 1 and May 24.

Polls open 7 am Tuesday for special constitutional amendment, school elections Early voting ends tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 29, in two special elections—the constitutional amendment election, in which this state’s voters will determine the fate of eight proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution; and the local CISD board of trustees election, in which voters will choose one of four candidates to fill the unexpired term of Landon Landry, who resigned from the board last month.
