A free, virtual legal clinic for veterans needing help will be held from 1-4 pm on Thursday, Nov. 11. The clinic, hosted by Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, offers help to low-income Panhandle-area veterans who need advice or representation on issues involving eviction and housing matters, public benefits, family law, consumer and debt issues, federal tax matters, and end-of-life documents. Eligible veterans will speak one-onone with an attorney during their virtual appointment. Interested veterans should call 806.373.6808, ext. 6503, no later than Tuesday, Nov. 9, to arrange for an appointment. Callers are asked to leave a message with name, phone number and a brief description of their legal issue. Calls will be returned by Legal Aid with an appointment time.

CANADIAN—Pampa Area Engineer Zachary Mayer has announced that James “Nate” Beavers has accepted the role of Canadian section supervisor, effective Oct. 1. Beavers began working with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in January 2019 at the Perryton maintenance section where he quickly moved up to crew chief.

Hemphill County Judge George Briant announced that newly-appointed Justice of the Peace Kathy Dumbauld will be officially sworn into office on Friday morning. The ceremony will be held in commissioners court at 8 pm at the courthouse. The appointment follows the recent announcement by longtime Hemphill County Justice of the Peace Larry Dunnam that he would retire from office at the end of this month.

Hemphill County Hospital lab reports nine new COVID-19 cases in week

According to the latest data from the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS), more than 250 Texans have died of COVID-19 on average every day in the last month. At least 89 Texas hospitals were out of ICU beds last week (Look up the ones near you using this handy link from Texas Tribune: https://www.texastribune.org/2021/08/23/texas-hospital-icu-capacity/). And Texas schools have reported more coronavirus cases in less than two months than they did in the entire 2020-21 school year.
