THE CASE OF THE DANCING COWBOY

Body

CHAPTER FIVE:

YUMMY SARDINES

Slim slammed the mailbox shut that’s kind of a tongue-twister, isn’t it? And turned onto the little road that led to his house. When we reached the front door, he pushed it open and said, “Get in there, dogs, and catch a mouse.”

I went streaking inside. Drover went inside too, but he didn’t “streak.” He lollygagged around, as he ususally does, and at that speed he couldn’t catch a mouse even if the mouse threw up his hands and surrendered.

Paws, I guess. Threw up his paws. Mice don’t have hands, see.

Now that school is out for summer (cue Alice Cooper’s legendary song) and you probably have nowhere to go on vacation, why not come visit your local museum? We are back open full time, 9 am-12 pm and 1 pm-5 pm, Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10 am-2 pm on Saturdays. Come learn about the history of Canadian and Hemphill County in an air-conditioned space. We even have scavenger hunts available for children of all ages. Admission is FREE! Michael Longhofer’s art show titled, Eclectic II, is still on display in our gallery room. The show will remain in our gallery room until the end of August. His works are very different than any-thing else we have shown. I know you will enjoy it!

What’s Cookin’ in Canadian

Body
Kay Brown brought by a large pot of tortilla soup with all the fixings for us to enjoy. It was wonderful, and I called the next day for the recipe. She told me the original recipe came from Linda Thrasher, and over the years, she has added ingredients to make it a family favorite. I like the fact that it was richly flavored without being too salty. The addition of tortilla strips and cheese give you just the right amount of salt.

My sister and I love kale. She grew the most beautiful hydroponic greens in Hawaii, and we enjoyed it daily, lightly sautéd in olive oil and garlic. She told me about this six-ingredient kale salad that she discovered on the Epicurious website. We made it last week, and it is delicious. Unlike other dressed salads, this one holds up well in the refrigerator to enjoy the next day. —KIM B. MCKINNEY

Some Good News: Canadian-Style

Body
ESPN released a series titled The Last Dance on April 19, documenting the Chicago Bulls and the dynasty they created during the 1990s. Unfortunately, one of the greatest basketball teams to exist was forced to break apart due to circumstances out of their control. Upper management decided to change things, and the “Dream Team” was given one final season.
