River Valley Pioneer Museum | Canadian, Texas

Well, I have to say that this 4th of July is one for the history books, but not necessarily one I want to remember. Normally, the 4th of July is one of our busiest days, and we would have had well over a 150 visitors. This year, we had two visitors. Just two.

I have been asked a lot of questions about George Davidson. This uncle of Augusta’s is such an interesting man and there is always plenty of information about him. I have always been interested in the history of the ships named after him. I found this information about the second Davidson ship but would like to know more about Davidson one.

What’s Cookin’ in Canadian

Body
This recipe comes from my favorite cook and sister-in-law Patricia in Arizona. From America’s test kitchen recipe collection, she said it was the most delicious she has tasted. Not a traditional pie crust, this one is made with vanilla wafers and shredded coconut. - KIM B. McKINNEY

Cavalier Coaches Rotary

Body
Apparently having three kids under 4, a full-time job, and a home renovation occasionally wears on Charlie Mann for some odd reason. On those wearing days, he and many others tune in to Coach Andy Cavalier’s morning encouragement videos on Instagram to get pumped up. Rotarians were privy to Coach Cav’s infectious positivity when Mann invited Cavalier to give a rundown of COVID in the CISD academic and athletic worlds.

And so the story begins

Body
IN 1888, THE CITIZENS of Canadian lined Main Street to watch and bet on competitions between cowboys in roping and bronc riding for an event that later would be cited as the first rodeo in Hemphill County, and perhaps in Texas. On April 27, 1888, Freeman E. Miller, the editor of the Canadian Crescent newspaper, ran an editorial asking citizens to make plans for big doings on the Fourth of July weekend. While Miller gathered the crowds, the cowboys at the Laurel Leaf Ranch organized the competitors. Thus, the first rodeo was born. The festivities lasted for two days and ended with an all-night dance.
