The Canadian football team was well-represented on the Padilla Poll Class 3A Division II All-State Team.

Carl Padilla is a longtime Texas high school football writer, and one of the most respected sources when it comes to high school football information.

After a 9-4 season, and run to the Class 3A Division II regional semifinals, six Wildcat players were named to the Padilla Poll All-State squad.

Senior wide receiver Angel Garcia and junior offensive lineman Corbin Throgmorton were both named to the first team. Despite fighting off injuries most of the season, Garcia finished second on the team with 40 catches, for 529 yards, with five touchdowns. Throgmorton played in all 13 games during a fantastic junior campaign, grading out at 96 percent with 25 pancake blocks.

Senior defensive lineman Nathan Mondragon, junior linebacker Matt McLanahan, and sophomore kicker Emiliano Hernandez were also first-team selections. Mondragon was a force on the defensive line, racking up 115 tackles, 15 of those for a loss, and seven sacks. McLanahan was equally impressive, making 146 tackles, 20 for a loss, with five sacks. Hernandez filled a huge need in the special teams, knocking through 70-of-75 extra points.

Rounding out the Padilla Poll All-State team was quarterback/punter Camren Cavalier. Cavalier was named a second-team punter. Cavalier averaged 38 yards per punt during the season. The sophomore even concluded a superb first year as the Wildcats’ signal caller, completing 194-of-315 passes (62 percent) for 2,434 yards with 23 TD tosses to eight interceptions.

“The way the Padilla Poll does it, is we nominate players and the coaches vote on it,” Canadian football Head Coach Chris Koetting said. “So, I was proud we got that many guys recognized. I think they were all very deserving of this honor. Angel had missed a few games, but the coaches saw how talented he was when he did play. Corbin had a great year. He was a leader on our offensive line and a great player, and McLanahan was our leading tackler. The good news is we will have several of these guy back for next year.”
