“Summer of the Bat”—Special Programming this summer: “Bat Tours” (Every Friday from June through August)

Friday 19 and 26:

•Bat Tours, (times vary), reservations required: Clarity Tunnel, an abandoned railway tunnel on the Caprock Canyons Trailway, is home to up to half a million Mexican Free-tailed bats each summer. During these guided vehicle tours along the trailway, visitors can view the bat emergence flight and enjoy spectacular views of the rugged and beautiful breaks of the Llano Estacado. Tours take approximately three hours to complete. Registration is required with a $10 fee per seat. Please call the park at 806.455.1492 for reservations or for more information. Registration and fees must be paid at the time of registration. You must cancel 24 hours before the start of the tour to receive a refund.

Saturday, July 20:

•Caprock Van Tour, 10 am, reservations required: While most of the landscape and wildlife of Caprock Canyons State Park speaks for itself, there are lots of other special features and information about the park that is left to be discovered. Join us for this guided vehicle tour through the park to learn all the ins and outs of Caprock with us. Space is limited, so reservations are required. Please call the park at 806.455.1492 to reserve your spot. Program is free with your paid parkentrance fee.

•Being Buffaloed, 2 pm, Visitor Center’s Pavilion: Is it buffalo or bison? How can you tell male from female? Are bison endangered? Join us for this presentation to learn about the American bison as we address some of the, sometimes, confusing information surrounding this animal.

•Moths & Butterflies: Nature’s Pollinators, 9 pm, Interpretive Amphitheater: Join “The Moth Man,” moth expert Barry Lombardini, as he explains the environmental importance of many of our native pollinators. We might even get to identify some of these fascinating pollinator friends. Please bring a flashlight as it will be dark after the program.

Saturday, July 27:

•Music in the Park, 7 pm, Visitor Center’s Pavilion: The magical piano of John Walker comes to life to bring you music of various musical stars of the past. John was inspired by music artist Floyd Cramer to love the piano, and we think you will, too. Chairs are provided, but bring your own lawn chair if you’d like to get settled in for more comfort. Event is free with your paid park-entrance fee.

Park admission: adults, $5; seniors, $3; children 12 and under, free. Camping is available, along with hiking, biking, fishing, and many other outdoor and recreational opportunities. All programs, except some tours, are free with paid park-entrance fee. For more information, please call 806.455.1492.
