Wildcat Coach Chris Koetting to be inducted into Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame

Just-retired Canadian High School Athletic Director Chris Koetting will be honored as the 201st inductee into the 65th Annual Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame. A ceremony will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, June 11, at the Grand Plaza of the Amarillo Civic Center.

House lawmakers defy Abbott on vouchers
A key House education committee adjourned last week without voting on a school voucher bill that is Gov. Greg Abbott’s top priority this session, the Houston Chronicle reported. Barring some unforeseen maneuver in the last week of the regular legislative session, the bill is effectively dead for now.

Millions of Texans still not wearing seat belts

AUSTIN – It has been nearly seven years since Eden Ganzerla lost control of her car while driving to work and crashed into a retaining wall, breaking nearly every bone in her body. Since then, she has endured thousands of hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy, the result of one fateful decision to not wear her seat belt.

Ganzerla now struggles with a traumatic brain injury, speaks with the aid of a computer, and is slowly learning how to walk and talk again.

County Judge Lisa Johnson rescinds outdoor burn ban

A countyside outdoor burn ban first enacted by Hemphill County Commissioners on April 10, 2023, has been rescinded. Judge Lisa Johnson has determined that due to plentiful rainfall over the last few days, the circumstances that required the order no longer exist. The order rescinding the burn ban was effective as of 10:30 am on Monday, May 15, 2023.
