Lady Cats settle old score with Gruver, then claim Fantasy of Lights tourney championship

The Thanksgiving break didn’t stop the No. 6-ranked Canadian Lady Cats from feasting on its opponents last week.

Canadian started by avenging a year-old loss to Gruver, then going down to Wichita Falls and winning the Fantasy of Lights Tournament small-school division to cap a 5-0 performance.

Wildcats find themselves on familiar ground in post-district playoffs

Canadian opened the UIL Class 3A Division II playoffs looking like a team on a mission, absolutely destroying last year’s regional champion, Lubbock Roosevelt, 70-8, last Thursday at Happy State Bank Stadium in Canyon.

The Wildcats improve to 9-2 overall and are now headed to the area round, where they will take on the Early Longhorns (7-4) at 7 pm on Friday night on Leo Brittain Field at Lions Stadium in Vernon.

Manny Ramsey: Former Wildcat defensive back goes the extra yard for Fort Hays State

Former Canadian Wildcat Manny Ramsey recently wrapped up his very successful playing career at Fort Hays State last Saturday against Pittsburg State (Kansas). Ramsey’s team fell 35-14 to a very talented Pitt squad, and Ramsey’s final stat from that contest was a solo catch for 7 yards. However, that comes nowhere close to signifying his contribution to the program.

Ramsey will go down as one of the best leaders and players to ever put on a Fort Hays State Tiger uniform.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, Coach Josh Mayhew’s ninth-grade Lady Cats defeated the Lefors varsity girls in a 24-18 game. Leading scorers were Sophia Mills and Addy Boyd, with 7 points each, and Sadie Kauk with 6. Jacy Long tossed in 2 more, while Jacky Lerma and Rebekah Avila contributed 1 each.

Cats claim district championship with decisive 77-0 win over Dimmitt

Canadian ended the regular season by sending its seniors out in a big way thanks to a 77-0 rout of Dimmitt at Wildcat Stadium on Friday. The Wildcats end the regular season on a seven-game win streak, entering the postseason at 8-2 overall and the outright champions of District 3-3A Division II.

Wildcat sub-varsity teams end winning season with three-game sweep of Dimmitt

The Canadian Wildcat sub-varsity teams wrapped up the final week of their football season with one last clean sweep against the Dimmitt Bobcats. The three squads got the job done in dominating fashion, amassing a total of 130 points to their opponents’ 24.

Special Delivery to Sportswriter Kale Steed

University Interscholastic League Executive Director Charles Breithaupt and Texas Girls Coaches Association Executive Director Sam Tipton made a stop in Amarillo Monday morning to present Kale Steed his TGCA D1 Sports Writer of the Year Award. The award was first announced during the 2022 honor awards banquet held in mid-July in Arlington, but Steed was unable to attend. A longtime sportswriter and avid sports fan his entire life, Steed is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Press Pass Sports website, which provides local coverage of Texas Panhandle sports. The Canadian High School alum also serves as sportswriter for The Record.
