EARTH DAY LAST FRIDAY, April 22, marked the 50th year of worldwide observances that call attention to the health of our planet’s environment. Here in West Texas, our environment is brown and dry with ever-present hot winds and low humidity. My community has had 0.98 inches of precipitation since Jan. 1. Most of that moisture was light snow.

AWE IS THE RAREST of experiences. To be surprised by something breathtaking, something that stuns and amazes, drives out all mundane thoughts and feelings. Awe cleanses the human spirit and lifts one up in wonder. Such was my experience last week in—of all places— Waco, Texas.
