KD: I have worked for politicians, dipped my toes into construction, served on committees and boards for various philanthropies, all while being a full-time mother with many hobbies. 2022: The state of economic development in Canadian and Hemphill County

In an annual report to the Canadian City Council, EDC President Remelle Farrar described the last two years as “rebuilding years,” during which council members made three important decisions: 1. To develop a budget below the projected 4A sales tax revenue, in order to ensure the growth of available funding for economic development initiatives, such as primary job development, business retention and expansion, and marketing and promotion.

Gaming ordinance adopted ‘right here in River City’

In December, council members unanimously approved an ordinance amending the City Code of Ordinances by adding Article 4.05, concerning the regulation and conduct of game rooms within the city limits. The ordinance establishes a licensing and regulatory process for game rooms and amusement redemption machines, adds an occupation tax, and provides for penalties not to exceed $500 for each offense.

Snow blankets Panhandles

An upper-level storm system brought an arctic air mass and moisture to the Panhandles last Wednesday through Friday, Feb. 2-4. Flurries started Tuesday overnight into Wednesday morning with a narrow band of moderate snowfall setting up Wednesday morning from Vega to Pampa. The band slowly shifted northward and expanded in area through the day.

Early voting in March 1 party primaries begins on Monday

Early voting begins next Monday, Feb. 14, in the March 1 Republican and Democratic primary elections. Two contested races headline the Republican primary here in Hemphill County. The re-election bid of Precinct 4 County Commissioner Nicholas Thomas has drawn a challenge from Jim Black, and Justice of the Peace Kathy Dumbauld, running for her first full term of office, is opposed by former deputy Jay Moseley.
