Public invited to learn about Canadian’s Bridge of Honor Monday evening at RVPM

Hemphill County residents are invited to join the members of American Legion Zybach-Owens Post 56 on Monday, November 6, for an introductory meeting to learn about plans for the inaugural presentation of Canadian’s Bridge of Honor.

The public meeting will be held at the River Valley Pioneer Museum. All are welcome, and food will be provided.

Early voting now underway

Early voting is now underway for the Nov. 7 general election. Voters will decide the fate of 14 proposed amendments, including measures to provide property tax relief and raise the homestead exemption to $100,000.

Xcel Energy receives $100 million DOE grant to boost wildfire mitigation, grid resiliency

Early voting in Nov. 7 constitutional amendment election begins Monday

Early voting in Texas’ November 7 constitutional amendment election begins on Monday, October 23, and ends on Friday, November 3.

Voters in Hemphill County may cast early ballots by personal appearance at the Hemphill County Courthouse. Early voting hours will be from 8 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday, with the exception of Thursday-Friday, November 2-3, when hours will be extended from 7 am-7 pm.

USDA’s Conservation Reserve Program pays more than $1.77 billion to producers

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2023 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued more than $1.77 billion this year to agricultural producers and landowners through its Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a critical piece of the Department’s efforts to support climate-smart agriculture and forestry on working lands. Right now, CRP’s more than 667,000 participants received payments from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) for their voluntary conservation efforts on more than 23 million acres of private land.

Canadian man arrested following break-in at Northcott home

Luis Vargas-Perez, 24, of Canadian, was arrested early Sunday morning following a break-in at the Kyle Northcott home on Sixth Street.

Video cameras at the home showed Vargas-Perez attempting to open the front door around 4 am Sunday, before picking up a chair on the front porch and throwing it through a window, shattering both the window and storm window.

Kyle said his wife, Janis, had awakened him when she heard noises outside.

Texas A&M Forest Service encourages responsible recreation during annular eclipse

COLLEGE STATION, Texas­ — Within six months, two eclipse events will crisscross the heart of Texas. The first being an annular solar eclipse occurring Oct. 14 and featuring a “ring of fire” created by the sun’s shadow around the moon while parts of Texas will be in the path of totality.

The second eclipse is a total eclipse, occurring April 8, 2024, that will traverse across the path of the annular eclipse.
