QUANAH—Larry Gatlin, country singer known for his work with the Grand Ole’ Opry and the Gatlin Brothers, will perform live in concert in Quanah on Friday, June 18, in a fundraiser for the Quanah Parker Society. Gatlin is one part of the first Quanah Parker Medicine Mounds gathering, a music and culture festival scheduled for June 17-20 in Quanah and at the Medicine Mounds near there. Tickets in the 716-seat high school auditorium range from $40-$75, with a separate meet-and-greet ticket available for $50. The Quanah Parker Society (quanahparker.org) is hosting the four-day event that allows public access to the mounds, celebrates Comanche culture, offers a variety of live music, highlights the history of the area, and includes a 5K spirit run and 1-mile walk on Saturday morning.

The Canadian Community Center is hosting a Bike-A-Thon this Saturday, May 15, for both adult and youth riders. The Bike-A-Thon, sponsored by Edward Jones of Canadian, Caprock Outdoor Adventures, and the Marty and Sharon Carr Ranch, will begin at 9 am on Saturday morning. There is no charge for participating, and plenty of great prizes are up for grabs. Riders are still welcome. HCUWCD to hold public hearing on proposed DFC

The Hemphill County Underground Water Conservation District (HCUWCD) will conduct a public hearing at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 25, to hear comments, to answer questions, and to provide additional information on the Desired Future Condition (DFC) of the Ogallala Aquifer within the boundaries of this county, as proposed by Groundwater Management Area (GMA) 1.

Familiar faces will return to the Hemphill County Hospital Board and the Canadian ISD board of trustees with the addition of one new face on the hospital board following Saturday’s election. Cody Culwell was the top vote-getter in both contested races with 48 percent of votes cast for one of two open slots on Canadian ISD’s school board.
