Admission to the City Swimming Pool was free on Memorial Day, and the sun was convincingly warm. This crew of lifeguards, and new pool manager Parker Lee, were ready to get to work at 1 pm Monday afternoon as eager swimmers came through the gates. Some of the stories I come across at the museum have me asking, “Is this for real? Did this happen here?” This photo of Sheriff Jones and Deputy Sheriff Oney, sitting in a 1933 Chevrolet Master Coupe with guns sticking out of the mounts of the bulletproof windshield looks like something from a Hollywood gangster movie from way back in the day, but in fact, this was right here in Hemphill County. This was one of at least two early police cars with bulletproof windows with mounts for rifles or machine guns for both the driver and passenger.
