Advised to disburse funds, county officials try to identify Thomas Brown Reward Fund donors

An ad in last week’s Canadian Record notified the public that donations made to the Thomas Brown Reward Fund would be returned to those who contributed, and asked that anyone who could verify their donation to the fund contact County Treasurer Kay Smallwood at 806.323.6671.

The reward fund was first established in January 2017, following the Thanksgiving Day 2016 disappearance of Canadian High School senior Thomas Brown.

Early morning electrical fire temporarily closes Cattle Exchange

Sirens pierced the quiet just after midnight on Labor Day morning, calling Canadian firefighters to the Cattle Exchange Steakhouse just a block away. Alarms inside the Moody Building, where the restaurant is located, alerted Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers to the fire.
The three-story Moody Building, which houses the Cattle Exchange and Abraham Trading, was one of the best selling points for County Commissioners to buy this 75-foot aerial ladder firetruck back in 2009. The greatest fear early Monday morning when the sirens sounded was that it just might be needed this time.
