The Hemphill County Underground Water Conservation District (“District”) General Manager proposes to grant an application by Lewis & Elizabeth Meers, 9172 Co Rd 15, Briscoe, TX 79011, (“Applicant”) for a new Large Production Well Permit authorizing annual withdrawal up to 344.44 acre-feet of groundwater from the Ogallala Aquifer for Irrigation and Agriculture, Domestic and Livestock purposes, using a proposed solar well located in the SW 1/4 section of H&GN Survey at Latitude 35º 38’ 6” and Longitude -100º 16’ 5.7”, Hemphill County, Texas.

Hemphill County family shines in Junior Rodeo Cowboys Association

Body

Three sisters carried on their family heritage in style with top performances in the Junior Rodeo Cowboys Association this year. Scarlett Thomas, Ivy Erickson and Elle Erickson are the granddaughters of Bill and Susan Morris, who raised and trained world-champion Quarter Horses in the Gem Community for decades before Bill’s death in 2018.

During the 2025 rodeo season, Scarlett Thomas, Ivy Erickson and Elle Erickson each brought home numerous titles while competing in JRCA events throughout the Texas Panhandle.

Hemphill County Grand Jury Report

Body

A newly-empaneled Hemphill County Grand Jury met on Thursday, January 23, and returned with seven indictments. 

Tyvan Brett Hegwood, 38, was indicted on a state jail felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Grade 2. On February 18, 2024, Hegwood was arrested and charged with intentionally and knowingly possessing less than one gram of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in Hemphill County. His bond was set at $12,500.

Hemphill County livestock producers reminded to report forage losses by Jan. 30

CANADIAN, January 17, 2025 —Hemphill County U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Janee Cross reminds livestock producers who suffered grazing losses that occurred throughout 2024 due to drought to report their losses timely and to enroll in the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) by Jan. 30, 2024.

Early voting in November 5 Presidential Election may set new record in Hemphill County

Body

By midday on Wednesday, October 30, Hemphill County election officials reported that the number of early voters here had reached 1,000, and that local voters were continuing to arrive at the courthouse. A quick check of the voter registration rolls revealed that just over 42 percent of Hemphill County’s 2,349 registered voters had already cast ballots in the November 5, 2024 General Election—a pretty good sign that voter turnout in the 2024 Presidential race may just set a new record here.
