By midday on Wednesday, October 30, Hemphill County election officials reported that the number of early voters here had reached 1,000, and that local voters were continuing to arrive at the courthouse. A quick check of the voter registration rolls revealed that just over 42 percent of Hemphill County’s 2,349 registered voters had already cast ballots in the November 5, 2024 General Election—a pretty good sign that voter turnout in the 2024 Presidential race may just set a new record here.

In comparison, early voting in 2020—when then-President Donald Trump faced Democratic challenger and now-President Joe Biden—totaled 49.89 percent here in Hemphill County. A solid 74 percent of Hemphill County’s registered voters had cast ballots by the time Election Day 2020 was over.

Four years earlier, in the presidential contest pitting Trump against Hillary Clinton, 44.17 percent of registered voters in this county cast early ballots, and when polling places closed on Election Day 2016, 71.37 percent of Hemphill County’s then 2,211 registered voters had weighed in.

Early voting ends this week, and extended weekday hours from 7 am-7 pm will continue until 7 pm on Friday, November 1. Anyone who has not cast their ballot in early polling may do so from 7 am-7 pm on Election Day—Tuesday, November 5—at their Hemphill County Precinct polling place (see locations below):
