Christy White wins Teachers on the Rise Award for May 2021

After Haeleigh Thompson’s heartfelt nomination, Christy White was announced as the Mrs. Baird’s Teachers on the Rise winner for May 2021. Every month, the Teachers on the Rise Award is given to a teacher, nominated by a student letter, who goes above and beyond.

State Robotics Contenders

The CHS Canadian Robotics-1 team was notified this week that it had advanced to the UIL state robotics championship, which will be held June 14-15 in San Antonio. Members of the team are (from the left) Nicolas Benson, Everett Cook, Mason Drager, Andrew Renfro, Callie Vinson, Rylun Clark, Ethan Flowers, and Logan Gatlin. Their instructor is Bruce Bryant, who said, “We are all very excited.” The CHS Robotics program is only in its second year since having been initiated in 2019 in an effort to expand the district’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) offerings.

Tasha Kate Butler earns master’s from TTUHSC

Tasha Kate Butler received a Master of Science degree in nursing as an adult gerontology, acute-care nurse practitioner during commencement ceremonies held at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock on May 5. The Canadian High School alumnus was also inducted into the international nursing honor society of Sigma Theta Tau, for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.5 or greater throughout the program and maintaining the expectations of academic integrity.

Canadian Middle School graduation ceremony next Thursday in CHS Gym

Graduation is back this year for Canadian Middle School eighth-graders, and next Thursday’s commencement ceremony will be one to remember. In contrast to last year’s digital event, this year’s will be live and in person, and will be held in the Canadian High School gymnasium, in order to accommodate the size of the class.

Thompson, Stiner earn top FFA honors

Canadian FFA students held their annual banquet on Thursday, May 6, which culminated in the presentation of two top honors—the Star Greenhand Award to Karson Thompson, and the Star Chapter Degree to Jessica Stiner.

Canadian Middle School Awards Ceremony

As the 2020-21 school year winds down, Canadian Middle School honored its top 10 students in each grade last Wednesday at the Texas Crown Performance Hall, and presented awards to outstanding students in each subject.

The CHS Theatre Department presents its final production of the year during the Wildcat Theatre Spring Showcase on Saturday, May 8, at the Texas Crown Performance Hall. The freshman class will perform 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse by Don Zolidis. The production class will also perform a few scenes, followed by the final performance of this year’s One-Act Play entry, Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play. Theatre Arts Instructor Mistie Walser said the evening’s performances will begin at 7 pm, with an intermission for dessert, and will conclude with a bow to this year’s seniors.

Young Environmentalists

The State Environmental and Natural Resources Career Development Event was held at Tarleton State University on April 29. Canadian’s FFA team placed sixth out of 25 qualifying teams. The team members were Kyler Altmiller, Peyton Dockray, Victoria Shott, and Saira Moreno. The purpose of the environmental and natural resource career development event is to stimulate student interest, to promote environmental and natural resource instruction in the agriculture food and natural resource curriculum, and to provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies as a result of environmental and natural resource instruction.
