The First Presbyterian Church presented its annual Live Nativity Scene last Wednesday evening, December 9, inviting the community to drive by the Presbyterian Gazebo from 6 to 7 pm to view the recreation by members of their Middle School youth and Wee Believers kids groups. A nativity scene draws its inspiration from accounts of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. In the photo below, Ava Guillen and Zaylee Ortiz are the sheep, Joaquin Flores is the shepherd, Cinch Hanson and Kate Escarcega are Joseph and Mary, and Baxter Landry and Corbpin Palmore portray two of the wise men.

This is our last article for 2020. What a horrible year it has been. I’ve watched several movies and TV shows about pandemics and apocalypses, but I never thought I would actually bear witness to one. COVID-19 has affected all of us in one way or another. Some have been sick or know someone that has been sick. Hemphill County has suffered two life losses due to COVID-19. Schools temporarily closed and parents became ad hoc teachers. Businesses have suffered, and at least one in Canadian closed its doors for good. People have lost their jobs or their hours were cut back significantly. Here at the museum, visitation is down 60 percent and donations are down approximately 30 percent. It has been a terrible, no good, very bad year. I’m not ashamed to say that I am thrilled that 2020 is finally almost over.

The Hemphill County food pantry, which receives food from the High Plains Food Bank; the USDA; Feeding America®, the nation’s largest hunger-relief program; as well as food purchased locally from donated funds and monies from Hemphill County, is a project near and dear to Tanya’s heart.

It’s a small world after all

Body
The world seems so big and disconnected at times, but time and again, situations prove it to be otherwise. Rotary helps in so many ways to connect the various cultures and people in our huge universe. We are involved in world health through Polio Plus, providing clean water and disaster kits, high school age youth exchange, and cultural art exchange, to name just a few.
