‘Flood and Fire, Deluge and Drought’ Lecture Set for Sept. 18 at WT

CANYON — A renowned historian will discuss the intimate connection between the human inhabitants of a region and the mercurial nature of their environment in an upcoming lecture at West Texas A&M University.

Dr. Char Miller, the W.M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis and History at Pomona College and the director of the Claremont Colleges' environmental analysis program, will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 in Legacy Hall in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on WT’s Canyon campus.

Second special session gaveled to a close

The second special session of the Texas Legislature ended last Thursday with a new congressional map, flood relief and safety measures but  a stalemate on whether to ban or regulate THC. The Dallas Morning News reported that lawmakers approved most of the legislative priorities Gov. Greg Abbott listed for the special session.

Hemphill County Grand Jury returns four indictments Thursday

A Grand Jury convened at the Hemphill County Courthouse on Thursday, August 21, and returned with four felony indictments.

Jackie Eugene Byrum, 37, was indicted on two third-degree felony charges of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury. The charges were based on a July 3, 2025 incident in which Byrum intentionally and knowingly caused bodily injury to a child 14 years of age or younger by hitting him in the chin and in the head. Byrum’s bond was set at $40,000.
