Council agrees to forgive debt and strike off Canadian Apartments from tax rolls, clearing path forward

City council members needed little time to approve a motion striking the Canadian Apartment complex property from the tax rolls and forgive the back taxes owed by owners Barbara and Galen Lusk. The apartments have been a frequent topic on the council’s agenda—and a burr under city officials’ saddle—since 2010, when its unsafe and unsightly condition was first brought to their attention.

City council certifies unopposed candidates, cancels May 1 election

The start of early voting is just around the corner in the May 1 local elections, which will feature contested races for hospital board and school board. In the absence of any challengers, city officials voted unanimously Monday evening to certify the slate of declared candidates for mayor and council, and to cancel their election.

State’s jobless rate still double record low The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent in January, down a tick from December’s 6.9 percent rate but double the record low of 3.4 percent in May 2019. It is unclear what effect the mid-February winter storm had on employment, when power outages swept the state and many roads were impassable.

Firefighters at the ready as red-flag warnings cover area Wednesday

Firefighters from the Fort Worth area arrived in Canadian Wednesday morning in response to red-flag warnings and the concern of a wildfire outbreak in the Texas Panhandle. Canadian VFD Fire Chief Scott Brewster told The Record he received a message early Wednesday morning from the Texas A&M Forest Service that it was deploying firefighters and equipment to this area.

National Cowgirl Museum presents award to Christina Voros

FORT WORTH—The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame will present the Patsy Montana Award to cinematographer Christina Voros at the 45th Annual Induction Luncheon and Ceremony. The luncheon will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the Dickies Arena where the museum will also honor five new inductees.

Burn ban enacted Facing the prospect of red-flag warnings in the first half of the week, Hemphill County commissioners authorized Judge George Briant to enact a countywide outdoor burn ban during their Monday, March 8 meeting. “With forecasted weather, and as dry as we are,” said Commissioner Curt McPherson, “it might be a good idea to consider a ban.

Hospital COVID-19 protocols still in place; masks and screening are required

Hemphill County Hospital CEO Christy Francis announced this week that visitors to the hospital and clinic will still be required to wear masks and to be screened when entering. Gov. Abbott announced last week that he would rescind the statewide mask mandate that had been in place since July 2020, and allow businesses to operate at full capacity.
