Briley Merket leads the field on the links at Childress this week

In this week’s Childress tournament, Briley Merket (photo at right) won the girls individual competition with a score of 92 for the day, and the Lady Cats placed fourth overall as a team. Ben Bryant was 7th in the boys’ individual rankings with a score of 89 on the course, and the Wildcats placed sixth as a team.

Kelton named Defensive MVP, Cavalier tapped as 2021 Newcomer

Senior Canadian Wildcat Twister Kelton (in photo above) earned honors as this year’s District 1-3A Boys All-District Basketball Defensive MVP and freshman Camren Cavalier was named the Newcomer of the Year. Those two players topped the list of All-District picks for Canadian. Two other players—seniors Reagan Cochran and Josh Culwell—were named to the All-District Team. Bushland senior Nathan Welch was named District MVP, and Spearman senior Jack Wilkerson got the nod as Offensive MVP. Other All-District Team members were junior Kash Bradley and senior Brody Sutterfield from Bushland; senior Will More and junior Michael Trujillo of Dalhart; senior Jerry Toe of Highland Park; junior Bryaden Klafka and sophomore Cason Mackie of Spearman; and River Road sophomore Jordan Malone. The list of honorees was released last week.

Former Lady Cat Haevyn Risley’s next-level defense in the spotlight

Senior guard Haevyn Risley leads the 2021 Midwestern State University women’s basketball team in total rebounds and rebounds per game with 85 and 6.5, respectively. Those impressive stats rank her eighth in the Lone Star Conference for total rebounds and 10th for rebounds per game.

Currently, MSU sits in third place in the LSC West Division standings. The full LSC point rankings, as of Feb. 14, sees MSU at the top with a 4.077 ranking. The top eight teams will advance to the LSC postseason tournament set for various campus sites March 2-7.
