Rotarians get personal invitation to next Saturday’s ‘Climb to Remember’

Body
Rotarian Ronda Bartlett, introduced our guest speakers, Bryan and Lea Bartlett, whom she obviously has a great fondness for and pride in. Bryan and Lea introduced their new company, Top Shelf Spraying Service, which Bryan reported came about after he saw several invoices from out-of-town service companies that were charging unreasonable amounts just to come to Canadian. He completed several courses through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services and went on to pass the required testing through the Texas Department of Agriculture to be licensed. Bryan reported being busy beyond his initial expectations and is counting on his partner, Lea, to help him out. Bryan and Lea have two small Wildcats named Case and Remi to also keep them busy.

What’s Cookin’ in Canadian: Peach Crisp

Body
We always thought Fredericksburg peaches were the best around, but I’m here to tell you Cunningham peaches are better, hands down! So, if you were fortunate enough to score a box this past week and want to make a delicious desert, you have to try this peach crisp. Your family will thank you. It’s also a wonderful fall or winter recipe to use with any sliced peaches you may have frozen. Enjoy!

I love driving by the old ruins of the Canadian High School on Kingman Avenue, now decorated with graffiti art. I try to imagine what the students were aspiring to be in a world so very different from ours today. This “Class Prophecy,” written by Helen Gerlach and found in the 1913 Canadian High School annual, gives us a glimpse of who they wanted to become:

I met my former mother-in-law, “Mama Lou,” and my former father-in-law, “Poppo,” when I was not yet 20 years old. I hitched a ride to meet them, terrified because I’d spoken to my future mother-in-law on the phone, and she sounded exactly like Lauren Bacall.
