It was a little hard to ignore the Frank Phillips College NIRA Rodeo held here in Canadian last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It may not have doubled the town’s population, but it dramatically multiplied the number of shiny new horse trailers, campers, and RVs parked down at the County Recreation Complex, many times over.

Joy Stiner (Jimmie Wyvette), Kaylee Scates (Gaynelle) and Clara Pulliam (Peaches) turn to a life of crime to steal a red velvet cake recipe in Saturday night’s CHS Theatre production of “The Red Velvet Cake War.” The dinner theatre will begin at 7 pm at the CHS cafeteria, with the show to follo immediately after in the Texas Crown Performance Hall. Save room for the cake auction, which will be held during intermission.

My tomato plants look horrid, just horrid BUT they are still producing lovely little red fruit so I will ignore the brown and limp foliage and make this delicious pasta. Roasting any vegetable enhances the flavor, with tomatoes it brings out a wonderful rich sweetness. Red pepper flakes bring a touch of heat and the Romano cheese smooths it all out.
