WTAMU 2024 Graduates to receive diplomas May 11

Next Saturday, May 11, Canadian High School alumnae (Class of 2020) Violeta and Jazmin Talavera will be among 1,500 students who will receive their diplomas in commencement ceremonies at West Texas A&M University.

The two sisters are both graduates of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. They have been hired at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where Violeta will be work in NICU and Jazmin in Med-Surge.

Rogers LEAD WT Cohort Announced for 2024-2025

CANYON — Student scholars for the 2024-2025 cohort of a prestigious West Texas A&M University program have been announced. Among those named to this year’s Rogers Lead WT cohort is Oscar Navarro, a sophomore accounting major from Canadian.

The Dyke and Terry Rogers Leadership Education and Development Program, or Rogers LEAD WT, was created in 2012 to challenge high-achieving students to further develop their leadership potential.

Canadian High School students win District UIL competition

Body

Canadian High School won the 3A District 1 UIL Academic Meet April 2 with a staggering 688 points, beating Bushland’s second place score of only 281 points. The top three individuals in each event and first place teams will advance to the Region 1 UIL Academic Meet April 26-27 in Abilene.

CHS Power-Lifter Karson Thompson competes in State Finals this Saturday

Canadian High School Senior Karson Thompson placed third in the Regional power-lifting competition two weeks ago, and will compete in the 2024 Texas High School Powerlifting Association Finals this Saturday, March, 22 in Abilene. The event will be held at the Taylor County Expo Center, located at 1700 Hwy 36. Karson is the son of Michelle and Dee Thompson of Canadian.

CHS senior Laney Hood is National Merit Scholar finalist

Canadian High School senior Laney Hood learned last week that she had been named a 2024 National Merit Scholar finalist. In doing so, she joins an elite group of only 15,000 students nationwide—about half of whom will share nearly $28 million in awards this year. She also becomes only the fourth CHS student (see list below) to reach that lofty level since the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) program began in 1955.

CHS grad, Auburn student and author Everett Cook gains attention for book series

     CHS graduate Everett Cook is doing more than just studying marine biology—he is well on his way to becoming a published author. 

     The Seven Black Riders, Book One, is currently under its second round of revisions with Bluebook Publishing in Amarillo. After garnering attention from professors and students at Auburn University, Everett was asked to attend the Auburn Writing Seminar in Auburn which will take place either Feb. 13 or 17, depending on Auburn’s bowl game.

CHS Valedictorian Ben Bryant receives Liske Cup honors

Sixty Canadian High School seniors received their diplomas during graduation ceremonies held on Saturday, May 20, in the CHS Gymnasium.

Following addresses by Salutatorian Ella Walser and Valedictorian Ben Bryant, presentation of the diplomas to each graduate, and the symbolic shifting of tassels from right to left—representing each grad’s crossing over to a new stage in life—Canadian ISD Superintendent Lynn Pulliam named the annual winner of the coveted Liske Cup.

CHS Senior Ben Bryant is appointed to United States Air Force Academy

WASHINGTON—On Friday, May 5, Representative Ronny Jackson (TX-13) announced that seven students from Texas’ 13th Congressional District received appointments to three U.S. Service Academies.

As a Member of Congress, Jackson can nominate students from TX-13 for appointments to the United States Air Force, Naval, Military (West Point), and Merchant Marine Academies. Jackson can also nominate students from the entire State of Texas to the Merchant Marine Academy.

Canadian Lady Cats grabs lead in fifth inning to defeat Dimmitt

Canadian Lady Cats stole the lead late in the game in an 8-4 home field victory over Dimmitt Varsity Bobbies on Saturday, March 25. The game was tied at four with Canadian Lady Cats batting in the bottom of the fifth when Miranda Nunez singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Leah Moreno led the Lady Cats to victory by driving in four runs. Moreno went 2-for-3 at the plate, and drove in runs on a homer in the third and a double in the fifth.

CHS wins District UIL Championship, sets records

Last week, Canadian High School competed in the 3A District meet for Academic and Speech UIL, dominating the competition with 802 points and earning the championship trophy. Competitors included Bushland, Spearman, River Road, Dalhart, and Tulia. The top 3 in each event advance to Regionals, along with the first place teams. Numerous participants earned a spot at the Regional UIL Meet April 21-22.
