Douglas Lee Gaston, 61, of Odessa, died June 17, 2019, at Midland Memorial Hospital after a short battle with cancer. A celebration of Doug’s life will be a barbeque memorial lunch scheduled for July 2, at 11 am, at The River Ministries in Canadian. Casual attire suggested (i.e., bib overalls or shorts).

Doug was born Feb. 13, 1958, in Hobbs, New Mexico. He grew up in Canadian, where he graduated from Canadian High School in 1976. Soon after, he moved to Bryan to attend Blinn College for a year, but then returned to Canadian and began working for Hodges Trucking. He continued his lifelong career in the oilfield, from Canadian to Bryan, to Alvarado and Odessa, working for Hodges for more than 30 years, mostly as a crane operator. If you knew Doug, you knew where you stood with him. He either liked you, or he didn’t; it was black or white. Doug took fashion cues from no one. His bib overalls were all the fashion statement he needed, despite a closet full of brand-new, neverworn polo and button-down shirts, all gifts from his mother. He was affectionately known as Gorilla, Coyote, or grumpy old man, by his co-workers; and Uncle Doug by his family.

Doug was preceded in death by grandparents, Burl and Bernice Gaston, and Benny and Burrell Robertson; his parents, Kenneth and Carolyn Gaston; his brother, Steve Gaston; and his sister Cheryl Dickinson.

He is survived by his sister, Cindy Gaston Talley of Amarillo, and her children, Ayvrie Dixon of Amarillo, husband Josh and children, Ashlyn and Jace, and Ashlee Talley-Salinas of Canadian and husband Eddie and son Edward; his brother, Shane Billings and son Cody of Bryan; his nephew, Brandon Dickinson and wife Heather of Midlothian; and his uncle Richard Pilon of Austin, wife DeeAnn and children, Elizabeth and Richard Jr.; as well as many cousins and friends.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas Ave., Midland, TX 79701.
