The storm that brought a brief downpour to Hemphill County
was as suddenly fierce as it was quickly gone, but remained long
enough for anyone with a camera or iPhone to capture its dramatic
presence—and many did. The thunderstorm swept into
the county and over Canadian on a tangerine sky, as promised
by the National Weather Service in Amarillo, which had issued a
severe thunderstorm warning for southwestern Lipscomb, northeast
Roberts and Hemphill County from 8:23 to 9:30. This one
arrived on time and did not outwear its welcome, but while it lasted,
the light was ethereal and vivid, accompanied by gusty winds
and only trace amounts of rain. As twilight fell, a dream-like mist
rose from Main Street’s red bricks. Photographer Dana Flowers
captured this beautiful image of the from her rural home southwest
of Canadian.
