A Hemphill County Grand Jury met here two weeks ago and returned with a total of 11 criminal indictments.

Nine of those charges were against Jared Fernando Barrerra, 19, who was arrested last month following an investigation into a string of aggravated sexual assault and related charges.

The grand jury indicted Barrera on five separate first-degree felony charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child younger than 17 years of age. Those offenses all are reported to have occurred between September 1 and April 15, 2021.

Barrerra was also indicted on a second-degree felony charge of sexual assault of a child and a third-degree felony charge of indecency with a child, both occurring on February 12, 2022; and two counts of unlawful restraint of a child younger than 17 years of age, both state jail felonies occurring between September 1 and April 15, 2021.

Barrera’s bond was set at a total of $1.8 million. He remains in the custody of the Hemphill County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition, the grand jury indicted Jose Duben Beltran Munoz, 40, on a state jail felony charge for fraudulent use or possession of fewer than five identifying items. The charge is related to a March 20, 2023, charge of possessing a credit card without the owner’s consent and with the intent to harm or defraud. Munoz’ bond was set at $12,500.

Mario Hermino Manriquez, 35, was indicted for one offense of evading arrest or detention with a previous conviction, a state jail felony. The charge was related to Manriquez’ intentionally fleeing from Deputy Oscar Ortega, who was attempting to arrest or detain him on September 13, 2022. Manriquez was previously convicted of evading arrest/attention in January 2019, here in Hemphill County. His bond was set at $5,000.
