The 2019 Smiley Johnson Municipal Band treated the crowd that gathered on Main Street and in the shade of the courthouse lawn Thursday morning to a medley of patriotic songs. Under the direction of Matt Phenix, 15 musicians performed The Thunderer, America the Beautiful, Washington Post, America, My Country ‘Tis of Thee, God Bless the USA, Veteran’s Salute, This Is My Country, You’re a Grand Old Flag, and The Stars and Stripes Forever. Among those who volunteered their talents were Delynne Dunn and Cindy Whitlow on flute; Mollie Baker on flute and piccolo; Alex Phenix on soprano saxophone; Autumn Flowers and Butch Whitlow on alto saxophone; Tiffany Carpenter on tenor saxophone; Dana Flowers on baritone saxophone; Mac Means on French horn; Breezy McArthur and Abi Black on trumpet; Nickolas Sparks on tuba; and percussionists Neyma Garcia on snare drum, Paula Forrest on bass, and Pam Means on cymbals. Among the musicians were six locals and nine who traveled from other towns. Special thanks go to conductor Matt Phenix; the Chamber of Commerce for reserving the band’s spot on the courthouse lawn; the Smiley Johnson family for setting up and taking down chairs for the band; Pam Means for stepping in to help on cymbals at the last minute; The Canadian Record for their great coverage; and Dana Flowers for organizing the annual event. Without the band’s spirited accompaniment, the Fourth of July parade just would not be the same.
